چکیده

Signals generated by the December 26, 2004 Asian earthquake that can be detected by elephants are examined. Arrival time differences serve to identify two acoustic and one olfactory as potential warning signals.

Chemosignalling of musth by individual wild African elephants (Loxodonta africana): implications for conservation and management.

Elephants have extraordinary olfactory receptive equipment, yet this sensory system has been only minimally investigated in wild elephants. We present an in-depth study of urinary chemical signals emitted by individual, behaviourally characterized, wild male African elephants, investigating whether these compounds were the same, accentuated, or diminished in comparison with captive individuals....

Triangulating the provenance of African elephants using mitochondrial DNA

African elephant mitochondrial (mt) DNA follows a distinctive evolutionary trajectory. As females do not migrate between elephant herds, mtDNA exhibits low geographic dispersal. We therefore examined the effectiveness of mtDNA for assigning the provenance of African elephants (or their ivory). For 653 savanna and forest elephants from 22 localities in 13 countries, 4258 bp of mtDNA was sequence...

Possibility of Tsunami Detection Using HF Radar WERA

High-frequency (HF) surface wave radars provide a unique capability to detect targets far beyond the conventional microwave radar coverage but also could contribute to the development and improvement of Tsunami Early Warning Systems. This paper describes the simulation of tsunami related signatures observed by HF radar at long ranges in case of a tsunami travelling towards the coast. A tsunami ...

Future Contribution of HF Radar WERA to Tsunami Early Warning Systems

High-frequency (HF) surface wave radars provide a unique capability to detect targets far beyond the conventional microwave radar coverage but also could contribute to the development and improvement of Tsunami Early Warning Systems. The HF radar system WERA is an oceanographic radar placed at the coast and providing simultaneous wide area measurements of ocean surface current fields and sea st...

African elephants (Loxodonta africana) recognize visual attention from face and body orientation.

How do animals determine when others are able and disposed to receive their communicative signals? In particular, it is futile to make a silent gesture when the intended audience cannot see it. Some non-human primates use the head and body orientation of their audience to infer visual attentiveness when signalling, but whether species relying less on visual information use such cues when produc...
